OLC4O Course Content: Ontario Curriculum Strands

OLC4O follows The Ontario Curriculum: English – The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OSSLC), Grade 12, 2003.

The course is organized into three official strands that develop reading, writing, and literacy self-assessment skills. These strands are closely connected, allowing students to apply their developing literacy skills throughout the course.

Strand A: Building Reading Skills

Students develop strategies for understanding informational, narrative, and graphic texts used in school, work, and everyday life.

They practise identifying main ideas, locating supporting information, making inferences, interpreting unfamiliar vocabulary, and recognizing the purpose and structure of different texts. Students also learn to select and apply reading strategies before, during, and after reading.

Strand B: Building Writing Skills

Students develop their ability to communicate ideas and information clearly through different forms of writing.

They practise writing summaries, information paragraphs, opinion pieces, news reports, and other texts appropriate to specific purposes and audiences. Students apply the writing process by generating ideas, organizing information, drafting, revising, editing, and proofreading their work.

Strand C: Understanding and Assessing Growth in Literacy

Students reflect on their development as readers and writers and identify strategies that help them improve their literacy skills.

They maintain and organize a literacy portfolio containing reading records, writing samples, and evidence of their progress. Through self-assessment and reflection, students identify their strengths, establish learning goals, and develop greater confidence in applying literacy skills.

Assessment and Evaluation in OLC4O

Assessment and evaluation in OLC4O measure students’ achievement of the reading, writing, and literacy development expectations outlined in Ontario’s OSSLC curriculum.

Students demonstrate their learning through reading comprehension activities, written assignments, literacy exercises, portfolio development, self-assessment, and other evaluations aligned with the course expectations.

Evaluation considers four categories of achievement:

  • Knowledge and Understanding: Demonstrating understanding of texts, writing forms, reading strategies, and language conventions.

  • Thinking: Applying comprehension, interpretation, planning, organization, and problem-solving strategies to literacy tasks.

  • Communication: Expressing ideas clearly and effectively using appropriate writing structures, vocabulary, grammar, and language conventions.

  • Application: Applying reading and writing strategies to different texts, communication tasks, and real-world situations.
